Gujarat police tapping phones, alleges VHP

AHMEDABAD: Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) has alleged that Gujarat police is tapping the phones of its office-bearers including Dr Pravin Togadia,
general secretary of the body. "The Home Department had threatened our activists that thier phones are being tapped including that of Dr Togadia and other VHP and RSS leaders' phones," VHP leaders Dinesh Navadia and Utkarsh Patel said in a statement. According to VHP leaders, Surat police had arrested many VHP leaders before the Surat bandh call given by the organisation to protest the gangrape on a minor girl in the city. Police has threathend VHP activists during their detention. They said that tapping phone of any citizen is illegal and the State Home Department must apologise to those whose phones were tapped by its officials. "The Home Department must explain when and who gave them permission to tap the phones of its office-bearers and why they are being tapped?" they asked. It may be noted that following the gangrape incident in Surat, VHP had given Surat bandh call yesterday and many of its leaders and workers were detained by the police.
